JoBeth Williams, born December 6, 1948, is an American actress and director who works in film, TV, and theater. She broke big with hits like Stir Crazy (1980), Poltergeist (1982), The Big Chill (1983), The Day After (1983), Teachers (1984), and Poltergeist II (1986). Her first time directing, the 1994 short On Hope, scored an Oscar nomination for Best Live Action Short. Since 2009 she’s been president of the Screen Actors Guild Foundation.
She’s got three Emmy noms: Lead Actress in the TV movies Adam (1983) and Baby M (1988), plus a guest spot on Frasier (1993–94). She also led the legal drama The Client (1995–96) and had recurring roles on Dexter (2007) and Private Practice (2009–11).
